FAQ

Questions from under the wiper.

The questions people ask us most. Still stuck? Get in touch. We read every message.

Is this legal advice?

No. Pushback is software that checks your ticket against published rules and builds a letter from paragraphs we've written and checked. It's general information and templates, not legal advice, and we never represent anyone. If your case is complicated or has reached court, get advice. Citizens Advice is free.

Will my appeal succeed?

Nobody can promise that, and we won't. We label every ground for what it is (Strong, Possible or Mitigation only), so you can decide whether it's worth it. For context, POPLA allowed 21.5% of the appeals it decided in 2024/25, and operators withdrew another 34,502 before a decision (POPLA Annual Report 2025).

Do I have to say who was driving?

No. For private tickets in England and Wales the registered keeper can appeal without naming the driver. What you must never do is say someone else was driving if it was you. Our keeper letters simply don't say either way.

Will I lose the discount if I appeal?

For private tickets, if you appeal to the operator within 28 days, the industry code says the rate you had when you appealed must stay available for 14 days after a rejection. It doesn't stay available once you go to POPLA or the IAS. Councils are recommended to re-offer the discount if you challenged within the discount period and lost.

Can I just ignore a private parking ticket?

We wouldn't. Private operators can and do take keepers and drivers to court. Appealing on time costs nothing extra and keeps your options open. Never ignore a court claim form.

What's the difference between a PCN and a Parking Charge Notice?

A Penalty Charge Notice comes from a council or TfL under the Traffic Management Act 2004. A Parking Charge Notice is from a private company and is a claim under contract law. They're challenged in different ways, and the checker handles both.

Do you send the letter for me?

No. It's your appeal, sent in your name. We give you a PDF to post and text to paste into online forms, tell you exactly where to send it, and track the deadlines with you.

Does it work in Scotland and Northern Ireland?

For private parking charges, yes. The keeper liability law (POFA) doesn't apply there at all, which often helps the keeper. For council tickets we currently only build letters for England and Wales, and we'll tell you before you pay.

What if something goes wrong with my letter?

Before you pay, we check the photos of your notice and the signs against your answers and show you anything that doesn't match. If your letter still has a fault on our side (a wrong date we worked out, a point you chose that's missing, a technical fault), tell us and we'll fix it, or refund you if we can't. A detail you gave that turns out to be wrong isn't a fault: edit it on your case page and your letters update straight away. Because your letter is generated immediately, the usual 14-day cancellation right ends once it's created. You agree to that at checkout.

What happens to my data?

We use it, including the photos of your notice and the signs, only to check and build your letters and send your reminders. We delete your case details and photos 12 months after you close a case (or after a long period of inactivity), and checks you never paid for, or that we refunded, are deleted 30 days after the check. You can delete a case or your whole account at any time.
